    Teaching time: a practical guide for primary school

    Time is one of the most abstract quantities in mathematics: you cannot see it, and the clock face demands two scales at once. This guide sums up what a sound progression looks like, where children typically stumble, and how to differentiate in mixed-ability classes.

    Time in the curriculum

    Reading the clock and calculating with time sit in the measurement strand of most primary curricula: in Switzerland, for instance, under "Grössen, Funktionen, Daten und Zufall" in Lehrplan 21 for German-speaking cantons. Early years focus on daily structure, weekdays and first clock times; later years add minutes and seconds, the 24-hour format and calculating with time spans.

    For practice, this means: the clock is not the topic of a single unit but runs through several school years, with plenty of room for repetition and rituals. Exactly when each step is due is set by your curriculum and the teaching materials in use.

    Separating points in time from durations

    Many difficulties arise because two concepts get mixed up: the point in time ("It is 9:15") and the duration ("Break lasts 15 minutes"). Build the two up separately and only connect them once each is solid on its own. A proven progression:

    • Sense of time and daily structure: rituals, hourglasses, estimation games
    • The hour hand alone: rough points in time ("about 3 o'clock")
    • Full and half hours, then quarter hours
    • The minute scale in steps of 5 (reading the dial twice over)
    • Digital time and the 24-hour format
    • Calculating time spans and word problems

    Spotting typical misconceptions

    Mistakes in clock reading are rarely careless slips; there is usually an understandable misconception behind them:

    • "To" forms are read forwards: "twenty to three" becomes 3:40 instead of 2:40, because "to" demands two switches at once: counting backwards and naming the coming hour.
    • The minute hand on the 3 is read as "3 minutes". Reading the scale twice over is the biggest cognitive leap.
    • The hour hand is rounded up: at 2:50 it almost touches the 3, so the child reads "3:50". That the hour hand creeps along and shows the hour already begun needs to be made explicit, best shown by turning a demonstration clock slowly.
    • When switching from dial to digital, "half past" gets attached to the wrong hour, especially for children who also hear German, where "halb drei" (2:30) follows the opposite logic.
    • The hands get mixed up, especially on stylised clocks with hands of similar length.
    • Calculating across the full hour is done in base ten: 9:45 + 35 minutes gives "9:80" instead of 10:20. Time is the only quantity in the classroom not bundled in tens, so the 60-minute rule has to be actively recalled with every calculation.

    Quick individual diagnosis: one child sets a time on the demonstration clock and explains their thinking out loud. The misconception shows itself faster there than on any worksheet.

    Differentiating in mixed-ability classes

    Few topics spread a class as widely as this one: some children already read to the minute while others are still on the hour hand. Proven formats:

    • Station or workshop formats with tasks at three levels
    • Open tasks: "Set a time and tell us what you are doing at that moment"
    • Pair work: one child calls out a time, the other sets it, then swap roles
    • Digital exercises that adapt the difficulty level automatically

    Language: "half past", "quarter to" and multilingualism

    The language of time has its own traps: the "to" forms name the coming hour ("quarter to four" = 3:45), and "two forty-five" coexists with "quarter to three" in everyday speech. Agree on one common way of saying the time for the class and label the variants as "also correct".

    For multilingual learners, the language of time is doubly hard: German "halb drei" (2:30) follows the reverse logic of "half past two", while French and Italian build "quatre heures moins le quart" and "le quattro meno un quarto" much like the English "to" forms. In multilingual classes, this makes a lovely occasion for comparing languages.
