    Calculating time spans: how calculating with clock times works

    Reading the clock is done – and here comes the next hurdle: "The train leaves at 9:45 and travels for 35 minutes. When does it arrive?" Calculating with time is the most demanding part of the topic, because our familiar base-ten system suddenly no longer applies. This guide shows the method that holds up: the timeline.

    Why calculating with time is so hard

    The classic: 9:45 + 35 minutes = "9:80". That mistake is no slip – it is perfectly consistent thinking, just in the wrong system. Time is the only quantity at school that is not bundled in tens: 60 minutes make an hour, 60 seconds a minute, 24 hours a day.

    On top of that, two concepts meet that children first have to keep apart: the point in time ("9:45") and the duration ("35 minutes"). A point in time plus a duration gives a new point in time; two points in time give a duration. Without that sorting, clock times get added like ordinary numbers.

    The timeline method: in stages via the full hour

    Instead of column arithmetic, the child jumps along a drawn timeline in stages – and the full hour is always the stopover: from 9:45, first 15 minutes to 10:00; that leaves 20 of the 35 minutes – so 10:20. Two simple steps instead of one error-prone carry.

    The timeline makes the calculation visible: start and end are marked, the stages noted above. Backwards tasks work the same way, just in the other direction: the film ends at 20:10 and lasts 45 minutes – 10 minutes back to 20:00, then another 35 minutes back to 19:25.

    Let your child draw the timeline themselves – a simple line with two or three marks is plenty. Drawing it is part of the understanding, not wasted time.

    The three task types

    All word problems with time boil down to three questions. Whoever can name them knows what is being asked:

    • End time wanted: "Start 14:20, duration 50 minutes – when is it over?" (point in time + duration)
    • Duration wanted: "School starts at 8:15 and ends at 11:50 – how long is the morning?" (point in time to point in time)
    • Start time wanted: "The bread needs 40 minutes and should be ready at 12:00 – when does it go into the oven?" (calculating backwards)

    For "duration wanted", jump in stages: from 8:15 to 9:00 is 45 minutes, from 9:00 to 11:00 two hours, from 11:00 to 11:50 another 50 minutes – 3 hours 35 minutes in total.

    Typical mistakes – and how to catch them

    Besides the decimal mistake ("9:80"), a few patterns come up again and again:

    • Column subtraction: working out 11:15 − 8:40 with the base-ten written method almost guarantees an error – time calculations belong on the timeline, not in columns.
    • Wrong stage to the full hour: from 9:45 to 10:00 is 15 minutes – children often say "3", because the minute hand only has to move three numbers. The dial helps: each number counts 5 minutes, so 3 × 5 = 15.
    • Analogue and digital mixed: "quarter to ten plus half an hour" – first translate into one notation, then calculate.
    • Across noon or midnight: 11:30 + 2 hours gives 13:30 – many children write 1:30, stuck in 12-hour thinking. And 23:40 + 30 minutes crosses midnight to 0:10. Both require a secure 24-hour format.

    Practising in everyday life: time tasks are everywhere

    No topic fits into everyday life as effortlessly as time spans – real occasions motivate more than any worksheet:

    • Reading the timetable: "The bus leaves at 8:12, we need 10 minutes to the stop – when do we have to leave?"
    • The oven: "The pizza needs 25 minutes, it's 18:40 now – when is it ready?"
    • Film or audio story: "90 minutes – does that still fit before bedtime at 20:30?"

    From what age do children calculate with time spans?

    First simple durations (full and half hours) usually at 7 to 8, minute-precise time spans and word problems at 8 to 10. The prerequisite is confident clock reading – otherwise two building sites overlap.

    Why doesn't written column arithmetic work with clock times?

    Because the written methods are built for base ten: when carrying, 10 ones become a ten. With time, however, 60 minutes become an hour. Whoever works out 11:15 − 8:40 in columns borrows wrongly. The timeline sidesteps the problem – no carrying is needed at all.

    How do I help without simply doing the sum?

    Questions instead of answers: "Where are we now? How far to the full hour? How much is left after that?" Once your child can ask those three questions themselves, the method carries – in a test too, when nobody is sitting next to them.
